Sildenafil
Sildenafil relaxes the muscles in blood vessels and increases blood flow to certain areas of the body. It is used under the brand names Viagra for treating erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men and Revatio for treating pulmonary arterial hypertension. Do not use Viagra and Revatio together.
Important Information
Do not use sildenafil if you are also taking a nitrate medication for chest pain or heart problems, including nitroglycerin, isosorbide dinitrate, or isosorbide mononitrate, or recreational drugs like "poppers". Sildenafil can interact with other medications, so consult your doctor about all the medicines you are using. Seek immediate medical help if you experience a painful erection lasting longer than 4 hours or sudden loss of vision.
Before Taking Sildenafil
Do not use sildenafil if you are allergic to it, or if you use nitrate medications. Inform your doctor if you have had any of the following conditions:
- A history of eye problems such as sudden vision loss
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding considerations
- Medical conditions like liver or kidney disease, or heart problems
Do not give this medication to anyone under 18 years old without a doctor's advice.
How to Take Sildenafil
Take sildenafil exactly as prescribed. Revatio is usually taken three times a day, 4 to 6 hours apart, while Viagra is taken as needed, 30 minutes to an hour before sexual activity. Shake the oral suspension before measuring a dose. Do not take more than one dose per day. Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice during treatment. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience dizziness, nausea, or chest pain during sexual activity.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Revatio, take it as soon as you remember, but skip it if it is almost time for the next dose. Viagra is taken as needed, so missed doses are unlikely.
What to Avoid
Avoid drinking alcohol and consuming grapefruit products while taking sildenafil. Do not use other impotence medications without first consulting your doctor.
Possible Side Effects
Common side effects include headache, flushing, heartburn, upset stomach, nasal congestion, lightheadedness, dizziness, and diarrhea. Serious allergic reactions are rare but require immediate medical help. Contact your doctor if you experience any unusual side effects.
Storage
Store sildenafil at room temperature, between 68-77°F (20-25°C), away from light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets. Do not store in the bathroom.
